Sparring or Drilling?

My recent video on sparring with Aikido sparked an interesting discussion... what is sparring? What is the difference between sparring and drilling? Can we come up with something that everyone can agree on?
Real Aikido Sparring That WORKS

In this video I demonstrate how you can possibly bring sparring to your Aikido training. I believe many people get this wrong and try to use Aikido to solve problems I don't believe Aikido was ever designed to solve. The end result is frustration and the feeling of resentment toward one's Aikido training. Many of the ideas I share in this video come from Christopher Hein who has a channel on RU...

    Good question, I think that it becomes a drill when it’s something “rehearsed” whereas I think of sparring as like, they can do anything within the style(as long as it’s safe) and so can you.

    the biggest difference is the fact that drills are an agreement to practice a technique or series of techniques in a planned way, as if you were acting under a script (fighter 1 does a side kick and fighter 2 does a backward displacement and counters with a round kick to the head), while in a sparring there is freedom of how to do things, it doesn't matter if both practitioners have objectives or are limited to certain techniques, it is the fact that they are allowed to improvise, to choose themselves at the moment what to do that makes it a sparring, it is the fact that they are given that freedom of choice that ends up making them do unplanned things and then it becomes something useful for the fight. Because a "real" fight no matter what kind is not planned and learning to deal with things you don't expect in order to use your resources is a crucial skill in combat.

    It makes sense that this style of teaching works better. I don't think it's going to come as a major surprise to anyone who practices full-contact combat sports. Sparring is essential to developing skill for fighting, and it makes complete sense that this would generalize to self-defense. Glad to see people with a more self-defense focused practice working on ways to apply live training methods to self-defense specific skills. I also really appreciate your point that martial arts can be worth doing completely independent of their combative value. It's something too many people forget. Play is the oldest form of martial arts training, predating the evolution of humans.

    I also got a question. When watching taekwondo sparring or a taekwondo competition, it always seems to me like they don’t block any strikes but just evade them. I looked up if blocking or parrying and other forms of defensive techniques are prohibited in the taekwondo rule set, but every source I saw said it’s a big part of taekwondo. A front kick ,for example, is often deflected by throwing the kick aside with the hands in combat sports like kickboxing or Muay Thai, but I’ve never seen this done in taekwondo before. Even if it’s not a technique which is taught in taekwondo, wouldn’t it be effective and beneficial to do so. Maybe I’m wrong about the whole blocking thing but it looks like that to me. Also, great video. It’s always a pleasure watching your videos🤙🏼

    Question. In Koryo, the stepping side kicks step in front of the leg as opposed to behind. It seems to me that stepping in front of the leg puts it in the way when doing the side kick. If you step behind it seems more efficient. Why do you think this form was made to step in front of the leg when doing the stepping side kicks? For your question about answering some questions in a short video or keeping then in the longer Topic Tuesday video, I prefer the longer one because I listen to your video while I do other things with my ear buds in, just like how proposed we listen to your topic Tuesday videos. That's not to say I'd be super disappointed if you make short videos to answer questions. Not a big deal to me.

    Being a Christian will make your effort, desire, reason for doing things, and worship to God a holy and pure action which is better than doing anything for yourself. It does not guarantee that you will be better or do better at some activity like Taekwondo than everyone else. But the spiritual assurance of salvation and a purpose of living for God and knowing you fall into His plan is what makes your desire and effort for yourself better. What matters is you train, as you do anything like studying for school, working at your job, or more, for the glory of Jesus Christ. If God wills you to be good or masterful you will be. If he does not then you will not. Yes, you must make an effort and a decision to go train yourself, but any skillset you gain through life is by God's common grace which extends to all, even atheists. I do believe that God will honor your integrity and effort to be good at something. For me, God has blessed me with everything in my life no matter how insignificant my life is or my worth to this world (which is not much because the world is at enmity with God). I am thankful to God that I made it in Taekwondo and other martial arts to where I am today. I do not seek self glory or worth to other people, but God did give me a gift to make it in Taekwondo and reach certain goals. God can take anything away at any moment. No matter what your place in life is, or what you are doing, remember it is fleeting and we cannot take it to heaven. Sometimes life gets us down and sinful things happen, sometimes outside factors and we feel worthless, hopeless, depressed, but remember God has a plan and this is part of it. Repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ that He has died in your place to take the punishment you rightfully deserve, and instead has forgiven you and made you clean and sinless in your soul and you will see God in heaven and have eternal life.

    I posted the first comment before viewing, but I wholeheartedly agree with your understanding. I like to think of the significance of self-control in taekwondo and as one of the fruits of the Spirit. I think of serving others in terms of being equipped to protect others if the situation requires. I find it interesting that no one seems to make the connection with the transformation of Jacob to Israel after surviving a wrestling match against God. In essence, the roots of the Israelite culture is based on a monumental event that we now classify as “martial arts “. Even when Moses encountered God, he was told to remove his shoes because he was standing on holy ground. How significant it is for us to remove our shoes when entering the mats. In a sense, I view my training as a time of meditation and prayer with our Holy God. As a Christian, I reflect on such things and more in reference to my beliefs when training, and hold it as a personal journey in my faith. People train for a myriad of reasons, but these are some of mine. Thank you again for tackling a topic seldom explored, and look forward to future content.

    Totally agree, Sir! Muay Thai fighters spar without allowing to body slam or triangular choke each other, yet no one utters a single complaint. Ignore the naysayers, Sir, I enjoy your insights and perspectives in martial arts, keep on doing what you’re doing! To me, sparring is free form, applying techniques learned on your opponent with, like what you mentioned, parameters put in to make the sparring appropriate. Drilling is less free form, more often techniques conducted with counts and sets by a supervising instructor.

    They all move like aikidoka. I'm afraid that, if you teach them aikido, that in the process you have ruined them as partners for anything close to realistic. You don't need to get wacked by a staff or anything -- at base level, you at least need someone who actually adapts to your counters and gives you something to work with instead of grabbing, holding, and waiting.

    • @tkdguide
      @tkdguide 10 дней назад

      Fair enough my friend, if I grab someone who has never done aikido, what would you like me to instruct them to do for the exercises? Grab and don’t let go, resist in any way you can, or do you want more from them? I will make the video for you, but tell me what you want to see in it first.

    • @combatlearning
      @combatlearning 10 дней назад

      @@tkdguide I should clarify that the fact they have training at all isn't necessarily a problem. Maybe with the right task constraints, you can get them to be smart and make a real effort to hold you. But it seems like aikido is very unique (similar to systema) in that it spends an inordinate amount of time training good, adaptable behaviors out of learners rather than encouraging them. In one of the exercises, the fault was more so in the constraints themselves ("you can't let go"). You might try opening the constraints or adding secondary tasks, like counter sweeps and takedowns are on the table. Or they have to push and/or drag you out of a space. However, that doesn't really explain the way they move in the other drills, where they take a recognizably aikido stances and move in uniquely aikido ways. Also, if you remove any possibility of bear hugs and bodylocks, the utility of the whole system for any purpose -- getting away, weapon retention, etc. -- becomes really suspect.

    • @tkdguide

    • @combatlearning
      @combatlearning 10 дней назад

      @@tkdguide Why don't we back things up a little bit. I know you have a bad hip, so let's start with gaining and holding a bear hug instead of jumping to takedowns. This is one big control position from which both trained and untrained individuals will attempt to attain and take you down. Remove the finish (takedown) from the equation -- at first -- and focus on preventing the precondition of such a takedown/tackle from occurring. See how the aikido works from there. Assess the behavior of the player who is attempting the bear hug. Does it seem like an authentic and self-determined attempt, or does it appear that he's trying to be an aikido attacker still? Is he purposely stilting his own tactical behaviors to leave you an out? Is he failing or succeeding to adapt to your countertactics? The task instructions should simply be, "clasp both hands together around my midsection." Arms in or out of the bear hug doesn't matter to me, although there are reasons to build games around those conditions too.

    Equivocating between live and dead practice exercises with the word "drill" is not helpful for anyone. It literally muddies the waters and makes productive communication difficult, if not impossible. Sparring has always had its own technical understanding within martial arts. Most people mean aliveness, although "one step" or "three step" modify it, and in that case, it is not live. This is why I developed my definition of aliveness. I define drills as scripted and/or cooperative exercises. They are not useful for learning to fight or compete. Hopefully we can rid ourselves of the ridiculous terminology. I think your aikido video was too cooperative to be considered properly alive, and thus it wasn't genuine sparring imo. He didn't need to be more intense or hit you with a staff. He needed more liberty to counter you in an intelligent way. From what I saw, it was quite overconstrained and your partner behaved like an aikidoka rather than someone who might actually try to manhandle you.
